| Good, economical choice for your Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate-based HTPC, though Blu-Ray DVDs must be played through the bundled WinDVD 8 LE player, can't through Media Center nor Windows Media Player. Be aware of the show-stoppers, though. Among the minimum requirements, your HTPC's OS must support Direct-X 10, so that means Vista, not XP MCE. Your video card must likewise support Direct-X 10, so that spells ATI's HD 2400 Pro (or the nVidia equivalent). And your processor must be an AMD X2 64 3800+ (or the Intel equivalent). That said, my system runs a 3600+, and though it's at the limit on CPU utilization during Blu-Ray DVD play, it still plays smoothly if little else is running in the background. Only plays, not burns, Blu-Ray discs, though it functions fine as a conventional DVD +-R, RW/CD-R, -RW burner, too. NOTE--Be sure to set the Blu-Ray region on WinDVD's setup menu before playing the first Blu-Ray or it will refuse to play. Your audience might get rowdy. |
